Having a coffee break while dyeing and finding I'm illiterate!

I now realise that I am totally illiterate! I went to Debra's blog on my travels and looked at the Times list of 100 books. Not only have I read very few of these but even fewer of the ones I've read have I liked. And I actively dislike the work of many of the author's so I realise that I am totally illiterate when it comes to 'best lists'. My degree encompasses History of Art and when reading for that social history had to be included because how can you really think about the art of a period if you don't know what else was happening at the time to be an influence on and a mentor for the productions of the day! So I've read all of Dickens, Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Thackery, Edgar Allen Poe, Sheridan, Oliver Goldsmith etc etc., but when it comes to modern authors I'm sadly lacking. But if asked about modern authors well I know what I like and its not a lot! Crime will always be my first choice of reading material. I don't do social conscience books. Life is hard enough anyway without having it rammed down my throat in a book. There is nothing pc about me at all and I resent being told how to think! OK small rant over. Actually I have completely lost my voice so would have been unable to actually say this! But its obvious that I am a sad, lacking in something character! Of course the reason for this lack of reading knowledge could be because I'm not American and it was an American list! I shall cling to that thought and go back to dyeing.

  1. Hey I read all the time. As a matter of fact when I'm not quilting I'm usually reading (unless I'm doing something boring like housework...) Anyway, I've only read 11 of those books, none recently and didn't enjoy most of the ones I read. Who comes up with these crazy lists, anyway?

  2. Most of the ones I had actually read on the list are ones I did in school - Evelyn Waugh, Golding, etc. Although I did read Lord of the Rings eventually (it took me two years!).

  3. Oh you guys make me feel MUCH better! I won't feel I have to 'improve' my reading matter now!Grin! I never could get into Lord of the Rings though I do own a copy and try it on for size every other year or so!

  4. Mmmm, I think Shakespeare and Jane Austen will survive for another century or so, but most of the books on this list will be library discards in a decade.

  5. Pppfffttt! My comments were on Julie's blog rather than Debra's, but I think that list is ridiculous and the people who made it must be pretentious bores.

I may blog about this myself tomorrow! :-)
