Clearing up the room and falling!

I have been ensconced in the upper regions of the house for what seems like an eternity wading through piles of fabric. When a box is emptied out the fabric is all compressed and seems like a manageable quantity but once movement has been started this innocuous pile leaps into life and becomes a veritable hydra with heads all over the place and as soon as one piece is contained another springs out! And I in my infinite wisdom emptied FIVE boxes onto my bed! Am I mad? Don't answer that as I fear the answer could be yes! I am having to have a rest before I lose the will to live! The only thing that is keeping me going is the thought that Martin will eventually return home tired and weary and expect to fall into bed. A normal bed, not a bed covered with a hundred and one zillion pieces of fabric! So far I have a pile of fabric to sell at very cheap give away prices, a bag of fabric for a friend/student who makes tiny quilts for the prem baby unit at a hospital near her daughter, and an enormous bag of bits for the dustman. Why do I keep scraps that only measure 2 x 2 cms! Not even inches! I can look at a piece of fabric of any size and immediately think of several things to do with it; only I know in my heart of hearts that I won't...well not in this lifetime. But throw those bits away and they will be the exact bits that I desperately need for a project IMMEDIATELY! But I am being brave and reckless! I also have a pile of bits that really are lovely and I can't bring myself to just wantonly discard them so these will be sent to friends and other animals as Gerald Durrell would say! Actually it is relatives I think he said but I don't have any or not many! I loved that book! I must have read it several times; I lent it to a friend and have never seen it since! Book or friend! And I hadn't filled her house up with piles of fabric either! So will I be able to completely empty a tub or two? This is what I'm aiming for as a start. While I was at work I made a plan. It is a good plan and entails going through all the fabric as I am doing now and then in a month's time doing it again! I can probably bring myself to get rid of more that way. My biggest problem is that I sell packs of fabric, threads, lace, beads, etc for Crazy Patchwork and experimental embroidery and I need to really take this lovely fabric I have and chop it up for my packs. This would be the answer instead of letting it sit in boxes, waiting! Perhaps when I have done the Big Clearout I will do this. But after the boxes I have drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe. Big, deep drawers; one of which I haven't been able to get to because of all the plastic tubs. I know it has lots of hession and scrim in it but what else is a mystery. It will be quite exciting! Actually doing the fabric is easy compared to going through the books. I hate to part with books! Oh well onwards and upwards!

  1. This is hard I know but if I can push through the madness of 22 years of collecting, I know you can also. We are made of stronger stuff than our stash. Hope Martin found a small spot to bed down.

  2. All your cleaning out has inspired me to do the same. Well almost. It's inspired me to at least think about it ;-) Anything to avoid finishing these 2 jackets, LOL.

  3. After 3 major moves in less than 2 years, i got rid of a LOT, but not *all* of those 2x2 pieces--some of them are more "valuable" than the yardage! You have to do it intuitively with a big box and a lot of guts--just huck it in if it doesn't *immediately* strike your fancy, seal it up and get it out of the house!
